Hana Black

July 18, 2021

Hana Black has always loved adventuring by bike - her early rides include the Heaphy Track on a fully rigid bike with homemade panniers (before it became a National Park). She has spent five of the last ten years cycling in 25 countries - including an epic bikepacking trip of 45,500km from the north coast of Alaska to Patagonia. Her current focus is ultra-endurance events in New Zealand.  She was the 4th woman to finish the Tour Te Waipounamu race in February 2021, and enjoyed the challenge so much she's signed up for another lap.

Age: very nearly 50 (Sept 2021)

Hometown: Lyttelton, NZ

Bikes in the garage: Otso Voytek 27.5+, Kona Unit 29er (1x10 conversion), Giant OCR1 Roadie

Favourite Biomaxa Product: Pro-Ride Chamois cream (five years of use without a saddle sore)

Favourite Food: Fish tacos, alpaca steak, eggs benedict, gluten free chocolate brownie... I could go on!

Favourite place to ride: Flowy singletrack in the mountains.

Best cycling memory: Finishing Tour Te Waipounamu at Slope Point earlier this year - super happy with my finishing time of 9 days 9 hours 9 minutes.

Aspiration (What you dream about achieving next on your bike): Finishing TTW in the top three in 2022, and completing our Alaska to Patagonia ride.

To relax I: Sleep in and a relaxing brunch (the day after a long bike ride on Banks Peninsula)

If you weren’t riding/racing bikes – what do you think you would do instead? More tramping in the Southern Alps.
